Ultraviolet Light Sterilizer
A high school student’s bright idea sheds light on the Solid Design Solutions product development process. From concept to prototype, our team led the young inventor to an innovative product design solution. The result was a new idea and product that solves an old problem.
Stop the spread of germs
For generations people have sought a way to stop the spread of germs. Vigilance is only half the battle. We can clean our homes, cars and workplaces, but some areas are out of control such as doctors’ offices, gas stations and other shared spaces. What can be done to sterilize common objects that many people touch? Steven McDowell, a high school student, had an idea.
A Bright Idea
Ultraviolet light kills germs. McDowell’s bright idea was to create a device that could use UV light on commonly used items to sterilize them. The Solid team worked to identify both the applicable UV light technology and the needs of the target users. The team generated a wide variety of concepts for storing, dispensing and presenting items, then a functional prototype. They also generated a host of product brand names and worked with a graphic designer to refine the brand badging for the product.
Ultraviolet Light Kills Germs
The resulting product is the UV Clens, an ultraviolet light sterilizer. Common items are inserted into the device and moments later arise sterile and ready for use. The ultraviolet light kills up to 99% of pathogens in seconds. The prototype has been in the field for many months generating market interest, investor support, and preventing the spread of potentially dangerous diseases.
