Automated parts trimmer

Solid found a way to save Global Polymer time and money by creating an automated solution for trimming the excess.

Challenge

Just a trim

Global Polymer was looking for a way to automate a process for trimming the flash from compression-molded plastic parts. The job had typically been done manually.

Solution

Cut time

Solid Design worked closely with the team from Global Polymer to review options to automate the trimming of parts. Testing in the lab led to a solution using a collaborative robot solution and a high-speed rotating cutter. Programming of the robot was accomplished in several iterations to maximize product quality and capacity.

Result

The perfect part

The robotics solution was implemented successfully into production. The complete system design includes fixtures for picking parts for deflashing and for delivery of the trimmed part for inspection and packaging. It provides a reliable, scalable solution for increased capacity.
